tips on anti virus, spy ware…etc..?

I am using advanced care system and AVG together. My computer seems to be running crappy. I constantly run advanced care system then it gives me the option to check the boxes and delete what may be malware. What is malware and how do I know if I should delete it? Would it make my computer run better if I deleted malware? It’s a 4 month old HP with Windows Vista. I think all the facebook applications may be part of the problem. I use farmville, fishville, cafe world and pet ville. Can anyone help?
